New wines are launching this month as part of the Dunnes Stores Simply Better range
Cathal McBride

From one of the most well known Beaujolais Crus, this Fleurie is inspired by neighbour Burgundy’s winemaking traditions. Made from the grape gamay, light and fresh raspberries and cherry fruit defines the nose perched alongside gentle floral aromas. The velvety palate is fresh and refined with vibrant acidity and silky tannins, leading into an excellent length and finish. This is an ideal wine for ageing but is also drinking very well now and is a perfect wine to accompany a baked ham centrepiece as part of your Christmas celebrations. Otherwise, this will also pair well with roast pork, poultry or charcuterie.

Marquis De Goulaine Haut-Poitou 2022 Sauvignon Blanc - now €12.50, was €15.99 | save €3.49

This stunning sauvignon blanc from the lesser known Haut-Poitou region near the Loire Valley presents a vibrant new world vibe and beautiful clarity alongside a classic French winemaking style. An abundance of tropical fruit hits the nose with fresh pear and a citrus streak, flavours which extend to the palate with a crisp but deliciously balanced and rounded texture. This is marvellous value – think Sancerre without the hefty price tag. It’s an ideal apéritif and is delicious served alongside all types of seafood, especially prawns, or with soft cheese such as goat.

Château Grand Escalion Costières de Nîmes Domaine Gabriel Meffre 2022 Romane - now €17.50, was €21.99 | save €4.49

Situated in the southern Rhône region of Costières de Nîmes, this is a delicious blend of white grenache, roussanne, and rolle (aka vermentino). A beautifully rounded nose showcases ripe peach and apricot, white flowers, vanilla and grapefruit. This extends to the palate with a well-rounded and balanced wine, a creamy texture tempered by fresh lemon zest like acidity. The structure would make this a fine choice as a white wine to serve with your bronze turkey at Christmas but also with other poultry, fish or a seafood platter with smoked salmon.

Tiki Single Vineyard North Canterbury Pinot Noir 2021 - now €17.50, was €21.99 | save €4.49

This comes with crunchy berries and bramble bush with soft and delicate spice in a nose that sings brightly of new world pinot. Juicy and exciting with lashings of red fruits like cherries and cranberry, it is elevated by clean, crisp and precise acidity. Made using Burgundian methods and aged for 12 months in French oak barriques, this has a youthful dynamism with a poised elegance that makes it ripe for drinking now. Its cranberry flavours would make it an ideal companion with roasted bronze turkey and cold leftovers, or enjoy with cheese, pâtés, or roast duck.

St. Giorgio Primitivo IGT Puglia 2021 - now €10, was €12.99 | save €2.99

From the well-known Tuscan Famiglia Castellani comes this big and bold Puglian primitivo, which presents with a sweet strawberry and raspberry bouquet nestled alongside mild cinnamon spice and herbal aromas. Plush and full-bodied with a smooth structure and firm tannins, the black cherry fruit shines in a powerfully restrained wine with a spicy finish. A style that conjures cosy winter evenings by the fire, this is ideal served with hearty dishes liked bolognese, aubergine parmigiana or an Italian antipasti platter.

St. Giorgio Appassimento IGT Rossa Passito 2021 - now €11, was €13.99 | save €2.99

Rather than being a grape, appassimento is a winemaking process where the grapes are dried before fermentation to concentrate flavours and aromas. Here we have a wine with exuberant aromas of ripe plums, dried fruits, cocoa and vanilla. This is a full-bodied, smooth wine with notes of raisin and chocolate that are well balanced and harmonious. Try it with an Angus beef roast and hearty pasta dishes, but the balance between the tannins and vibrant acidity also make it ideal with stews, game meat or aged cheeses

Quinta da Pedra Cavada Reserva Douro 2021 - was €15, was €18.99 | save €3.99

Juicy and succulent, this blend which includes Portugal’s flagship red grape touriga nacional, presents deeply inviting nose of ripe black and red berried fruit, with a whisper of cedar and oak spice from partial ageing in oak barrels. A deliciously silky smooth and well balanced Douro red, with plenty of juicy berries and structured tannins. This is a beautiful winter warming wine that will pair well with grilled or roasted red meats like Angus Beef roast, slow-cooked casseroles and hard cheeses.

The Specialyst Lodi Zinfandel 2019, was €19.99 was €24.99 | save €5

From Central Valley California, Lodi is world renowned for its zinfandel – which is the same grape variety as primitivo - so you can expect similar beautifully ripe fruit and robust flavours. This is all about the fruit with mounds of winter berries to the fore in a bouquet of sweet cherry, stewed blackberry, vanilla and a fleck of white pepper spice. This is a well-balanced wine, rich but smooth where a small addition of petite syrah adds roundness. Pair with ribs, sliders and spicy chicken wings for a New Year’s feast, or alongside grilled meats.
