Strata3 turns Darkness into Light virtual

A Dublin web development and design house helped make the annual Darkness into Light walk by Pieta House go virtual this year.

There are normally over 200 walks held by Pieta House for the event nationwide, with 5km walks starting just before dawn. This year’s event could not go ahead as normal, but Strata3 developed a way for it to still be conducted – virtually.

The Darkness into Light website was converted into a hub for people to share videos and photos of them going outside at dawn yesterday morning.

“One of our designers. Aisling Smith, spent an entire weekend developing the concept. The fundraising directors in Pieta House were blown away by it,” Maria O’Neill, head of client relations at Strata3, told Connected.

“It was developed from scratch over a three-week period, with our staff volunteering to put it together in their free time. Anyone who has done the walk knows the sense of community and solidarity that’s there for it.”

A total of nine designers and developers gave up their personal time to build the site and make it ready for this year’s event. “They did a standout job. It’s really testament to the sense of willingness to support this charity,” O’Neill said.

Tom McEvoy, funding and advocacy manager at Pieta House, said the virtual event would be a significant help to the charity.

“When this approach was made we opened our arms up to see how we could embrace it. Pieta is no different to any other charity. We’re in a financially vulnerable place, we’re asking and imploring people to help maintain the services we provide,” said McEvoy.

“The reaction from the public has been tremendous. It’s solidarity, a day of people coming together in yellow, and showing we’re not on our own.”
