David McCourt breezed into the glass-clad conference room on the top floor of Arthur Cox’s Dublin offices, shook hands and politely explained why he had to leave again.

McCourt, the face of Ireland’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), is a busy man, and last week he was working to finalise a deal which will see 80 per cent of the state’s multibillion-euro rural internet project sold to Spanish investors.

His brief absence was one of three such departures the Bostonian made before he finally sat down to talk to the Business Post about that deal, the project’s controversial history and what he regards as its bright future.
