It may be naive to expect politicians to be nice, and perhaps ridiculous too if we expect them to make hard decisions, but it’s surely not too much to expect them not to be nasty.

Rishi Sunak, the latest British prime minister, has picked what is at best an uninspiring-looking cabinet in the name of unity, claiming it to be full of the best talent, experience and continuity.
