Lloyd’s of London has posted its first full-year loss since 2005 after the worst year for natural catastrophe insurance claims on record.

The insurer posted a pretax loss of £516 million pounds in 2011, compared with a £2.2 billion profit in 2010, it said in a statement today. The market lost £103 million in 2005, when Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, said a Bloomberg News report.
